Mahābhāva Dhāma

śraddhā → sādhu-saṅga → bhajana-kriyā → anartha-nivṛtti → niṣṭhā → ruci → āsakti → bhāva → prema → ... → mahābhāva

Mahabhava Dhama is a small and intimate traveling temple, centered around a unique altar that embodies two oceans of divine love — the līlā of Rādhā-Kṛṣṇa and the līlā of Gaurāṅga.

The eternal companions of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu are manifesting once again in this world.

Mahābhāva Dhāma is revealed through more than 150 finely hand-crafted Deities of the Gauḍīya-Vaiṣṇava tradition — the eternal associates of Śrīmatī Rādhārāṇī and Kṛṣṇa, Śrī Gaurāṅga Mahāprabhu, the ācāryas, and exalted personalities of the line of devotional service.

Mahābhāva Dhāma is manifested by devotees of ISKCON as an offering to Śrīla Prabhupāda — the ācārya of an unprecedented wave of Gaurāṅga-līlā, through whom the mercy of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu first, and forever, embraced the entire world. Through Śrīla Prabhupāda, the hidden reality of Vṛndāvana, the holy name of Kṛṣṇa, and the path of pure prema became accessible to people of all nations, cultures, and languages.

Mahābhāva Dhāma is a humble offering of gratitude and reverence to Śrīla Prabhupāda and his mission — to preserve and pass on the living presence of Gaurāṅga-līlā and Rādhā-Kṛṣṇa-līlā in our time.

“What would you do, O beggar with a heart of stone, if sincere sādhus with hearts in bloom did not reveal Vṛndāvana here? What would you do?”

ISKCON ONE LOVE

There is no other altar like this anywhere in the world

Mahābhāva Dhāma is visited by ISKCON spiritual teachers (some of whom find their place on the altar), senior devotees and mentors, Bābājī Mahārājas and the mahāntas of Vraja, well-known figures, and sincere Vaiṣṇavas. Each receives a unique darśana that remains forever in the heart. And anyone who once beholds Mahābhāva Dhāma carries that darśana within—an intense inner experience that continues to live in the heart and, in time, unfolds in prema-rūpa.

The Story of the Manifestation of Mahābhāva Dhāma
For several years, while trying to practice the process of bhakti as it was given to the world by Śrīla Prabhupāda, one dāsa first saw Kṛṣṇa in 2010, by the mercy of his mentor in the brahmacārī āśrama, Pavana Prabhu. From that moment, the life of this dāsa changed. A small attachment to Kṛṣṇa appeared, and along with it, a gradual inner unfolding of tattva — the Absolute Truth — began to take place in the heart.

While serving on the council of a large community, giving seminars in temples, and remaining an enthusiastic devotee, this dāsa found his attention becoming more and more absorbed in Kṛṣṇa.

In 2014, Vāmana Prabhu, with whom he had served together in the āśrama, entrusted this Kṛṣṇa to the dāsa. He had been waiting for Him as the Lord within his heart — One he had not yet seen within, but whom he could now behold in the form of the Deity. And so, in truth, it was not a Deity. It was Kṛṣṇa Himself, the Supreme Personality of Godhead.
In the photo is that very Kṛṣṇa who came to the dāsa.
This is one example of the altars that were made for Him. Nearby there was always a garland of clay from Rādhā Kuṇḍa, embodying Śrīmatī Rādhārāṇī. In the background — an iPad with Śrīla Prabhupāda’s japa, the sounds of Vṛndāvana’s birds, and carefully chosen photographs of Vṛndāvana’s nature.

With this altar of Kṛṣṇa, the dāsa traveled to Vṛndāvana and shared long, warm conversations with Sulochanā Prabhu, who showed the dāsa — by living example — what ruci for Kṛṣṇa truly is.

śraddhā → sādhu-saṅga → bhajana-kriyā → anartha-nivṛtti → niṣṭhā → ruci → āsakti → bhāva → prema
In the same year, 2014, Śrīla Bhakti Vijñāna Gosvāmī Mahārāja instructed the dāsa to find Ānanda Vardhana Svāmī Mahārāja on the banks of Śrī Rādhā Kuṇḍa. It was a historic meeting for the dāsa. Over time, a living interest began to awaken in him—not only in Kṛṣṇa, but in Kṛṣṇa’s world itself: Vṛndāvana and its inhabitants. Deep empathy with Kṛṣṇa’s relationship with Vṛndāvana, and with the residents of Vṛndāvana, over the course of two years led the dāsa to a profound and unexpected encounter with Śrīmatī Rādhārāṇī.
“Is it possible to plunge into the ocean of Kṛṣṇa’s love without ever worshiping the dust of Śrī Rādhā’s lotus feet? Without taking shelter of Śrī Vṛndāvana, which holds the memory of Her pastimes and the traces of Her lotus feet? Without serving the devotees whose hearts are filled with Her deepest moods? It is impossible.”
Raghunātha dāsa GosvāmīSva-saṅkalpa-prakāśa-stotra, verse 1.
In 2016, an inner connection began to form in the heart of one dāsa — between Śrīmatī Rādhārāṇī and Kṛṣṇa, Their companions in Vṛndāvana, and the ācāryas of Gaurāṅga-līlā. From this connection, a dream was born. From that moment, the gradual manifestation of Mahābhāva Dhāma began — the altar of two oceans: Rādhā-Kṛṣṇa-līlā and Gaurāṅga-līlā.
In the photo, Śrīmatī Rādhārāṇī has already appeared beside Kṛṣṇa in the form of an image, just as on the altar of the spiritual master, Śrīla Bhakti Vijñāna Gosvāmī Mahārāja. Beside Śrīmatī Rādhārāṇī and Kṛṣṇa, Lalitā and Viśākhā are engaged in their service; they would later manifest in these places in the form of Deities.

The altar gradually began to transform into a nikuñja-mandira, as envisioned by Śrīla Prabhupāda in the Kṛṣṇa-Balarāma Mandir. By this time, Tulasī Mahārāṇī Vṛndā Devī was already present, accompanied by the monkey Kākhātī, the monkey Dadhilobha, cows, ducks, and the turtle of Rādhā-kuṇḍa; the parrots Śuka and Śārī; the little elephant of Śrīmatī Rādhārāṇī; the squirrel of Vṛndāvana; and the merciful Gopīśvara Mahādeva.

And perhaps most importantly, the first residents of the manifested Vṛndāvana in Mahābhāva Dhāma were Śrīla Sanātana Gosvāmī (the sambandha-ācārya), followed by Śrīla Rūpa Gosvāmī (the abhidheya-ācārya). Around them, places have been marked for the other anticipated Personalities.
Śrī Śrī
Rādhā Śyāmasundara
In June 2017, the beautiful Śrīmatī Rādhārāṇī and Śyāmasundara entered the life of this dāsa — Mahābhāva Svarūpiṇī Śrīmatī Rādhārāṇī and Her beloved Rasikaśekhara Rasarāja Śyāmasundara. They are woven of prema.
“In Vṛndāvana, beneath a wish-fulfilling tree, stands a temple made of jewels. Upon a radiant throne sit Śrī Śrī Rādhā-Govinda, lovingly served by Their most trusted associates. With deep humility, I bow down before Them.”
Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Ādi-līlā, Chapter 1, Verse 16
If one meditates for a long time on Śrīmatī Rādhārāṇī, Kṛṣṇa, and Their līlās, one becomes completely purified of material contamination and is carried to the spiritual world. There the soul is given the opportunity to serve Śrīmatī Rādhārāṇī and Kṛṣṇa in the form of one of the gopīs.
Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Madhya-līlā, Chapter 8, Verse 229
In 2018, Nadezhda Sheremetyeva revealed the first Deity of the nitya-rūpa of Govardhana in the form of a painting.
All instructions ultimately come down to this: one must constantly — twenty-four hours a day — chant the divine name of Kṛṣṇa with focused attention and glorify His transcendental form, qualities, and eternal pastimes, gradually engaging the tongue and the mind in this practice. Always remembering the holy name, form, qualities, and eternal līlās of Kṛṣṇa, one should live in Vraja and serve Kṛṣṇa under the guidance of the devotees. One must follow in the footsteps of those devotees who are very dear to Kṛṣṇan and deeply attached to loving devotional service to Him.
Rūpa Gosvāmī, Upadeśāmṛta
Śrīla Prabhupāda, The Nectar of Instruction, Text 8
“A devotee should always meditate on Kṛṣṇa and choose one of Kṛṣṇa’s dear devotees in Vṛndāvana as their ideal. One should constantly hear about that servant of Kṛṣṇa and their loving relationship with Him. One should reside in Vṛndāvana, and if living there physically is not possible, then one should live there within the mind”.
Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Madhya-līlā, Chapter 22, Verse 160
“Sādhus are My very heart, and within their hearts I dwell alone. They know no one but Me, and therefore I acknowledge only them as truly My own”.
Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Ādi-līlā 1.62
In 2019, in Vraja, at the foot of Govardhana, Śrīla Bhakti Vijñāna Gosvāmī Mahārāja and Ānanda Vardhana Svāmī Mahārāja first beheld the Altar of Vraja.
In 2021, Śyāmeśvarī Rādhe revealed the second Deity of Govardhana’s nitya-rūpa.
More than 150 Personalities have been manifested since 2017.

Mahābhāva Dhāma
Srila Dhanurdhara Swami

Mahābhāva Dhāma may be Govardhan’s best kept secret. It’s simply a room in the house of a humble devotee who lives near me here in the dhāma, a happily married man with three children from somewhere in the former Soviet Union.

dāsa has deep affection for the Vaiṣṇavas. Besides hosting Śrī Śrī Radha Shyamsundara in his temple room, his altar is home to over 150 finely hand-crafted deities of Vaiṣṇavas in the Gauḍīya tradition. They include both contemporary devotees and all the eternal associates of Śrī Caitanya going way back to His līlā. And that ocean is constantly expanding. The last time I visited him nineteen new deities had just arrived. Words just can’t describe their beauty.

Indeed, the deity one chooses to worship first manifests within one’s heart. dāsa’s heart is very big. While the heart of a kaniṣṭha (neophyte) barely has room there for God, and certainly not for His devotees, dāsa’s heart is filled with devotees. Isn’t that the bhakti philosophy?

A devotee is one who takes the mood of his guru. And what is that mood? It is the energy of pure devotion. That sentiment is personified in Śrī Radha and Her expansions, embodied in the heart of Śrī Caitanya and His dear associates and finally carried to the present day by His lineage of pure devotees. Mahābhāva Dhāma materializes that history of gaura-līlā in the exquisite mūrti forms of the devotees who have carried the waves of devotion to this world.

The special treat for me in visiting Mahābhāva Dhāma is association with dāsa. With deep devotion he explains his altar. He traces the bhāva-rūpā(the form of devotion) and how it flows in waves throughout the world from one generation of devotees to the next, culminating in “the final tsunami of prema inundating the world through Śrīla Prabhupāda and his followers.”

His appreciation for Śrīla Prabhupāda and his disciples is profound. In the modern world, we often get hung up on the failings of those whom we trusted and the hurt they caused. There is certainly a reason for that. dāsa, however, never sees the faults of dedicated devotees as their whole person, and especially not in the case of those who had dedicated their life to Śrīla Prabhupāda’s mission. A small deity of Harikeśa Mahārāja (now Hari) just arrived. He is sitting before the stacks of Śrīla Prabhupāda’s books that he gave his life to publish. Resting on them there is even a facsimile of the microphone he famously would hold to record Śrīla Prabhupāda’s words when he served as his secretary.

I also like the deity of Aindra dasa with his harmonium right behind the deity of Nāmācārya Śrīla Haridāsa Ṭhākura with both seemingly chanting for Śrī Radha and her intimate devotees, the aṣṭakasakhīs and their mañjarīs, who are also on the altar in their deity formsI could go on and on. There are so many beautifully done figures of profound devotion. The deity of Yamuna devi is stunning.

dāsa is quite creative. Another deity that caught my eye is the new deity of Nṛsiṁha Brahmacārī before the beautiful path of jewels and flowers that he manifested in his mind for taking Śrī Caitanya to Vrindavan. I also loved the newly arrived deity of Rāghava Paṇḍita sitting before the bags of prasādam that he would bring to Puri for Śrī Caitanya, expertly cooked by his sister Damayantī, whose deity is also there.

dāsa has deep loyalty to Śrīla Prabhupāda and his lineage. That is reflected in the way his altar flows from Radha-Krishna to gaura-līlā culminating in over fifty deities of Śrīla Prabhupāda disciples, including prominent grand-disciples like Kadamba Kanana Swami, Chaitanya Chandra Prabhu and others. He bursts with devotion as he describes the waves of gaura-līlā flooding the world through the members of ISKCON. But dāsa is nonsectarian. Śrīla Prabhupāda has commented in his books that there are many pure devotees of different lineages wandering in Vrindavan. dāsa has also a small section for those, whom he reveres also as the modern-day protectors of prema-bhakti. He knows several of them.

The deity of the famous Braja saint Vinod Baba is a masterpiece that not only reflects his saintly form but seems to perfectly express his bhāva. “How did you do that!?” Even that great saint of Varsana was amazed when dāsa showed him a picture of his own deity.

Nava Kisor Baba took a type of kṣetra-sannyāsa. It seems he vowed never to leave Radha Kunda or at least was reluctant to do so. Somehow dāsa had befriended this saint, and they seemingly became close. Still, when dāsa would beg him to come see Mahābhāva Dhāma at his residence in Govardhan, he would refuse. Finally, out of frustration dāsa told him that if Baba would not visit his kuṭira, then he would no longer visit his. Out of affection for dāsa, the humble Vaiṣṇava relented and came. When Nava Kisor Baba saw the ocean of devotees all united in the service of gaura-līlā including Śrīla Prabhupāda’s followers and a small group of contemporary saints, including his own form and that of Prana Krishna Baba, his revered guru, he fainted on the spot.

Where to stop? Each deity has a story which dāsa shares. He joyfully describes the qualities of the devotees on his altar and how each is profoundly connected to the waves of Gaura-līlā that flood the world. Each time you visit him he highlights different devotees as he spontaneously moves from one deity to another. What stays the same, however, is his deep regard for all the Lord’s devotees. And isn’t that our philosophy?

“‘The Supreme is present in every living entity.’ We should better take note of this particular verse from the Vaiṣṇava ācāryas like Jīva Gosvāmī and Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura instead of following the interpretation of unauthorized persons who deride Kṛṣṇa. Jīva Gosvāmī, commenting on this verse, says that Krishna, in His plenary expansion as Paramātmā, is situated in the moving and the nonmoving entities as the Supersoul, so any neophyte devotee who simply gives his attention to the arcā-mūrti, the form of the Supreme Lord in the temple, and does not respect other living entities is uselessly worshiping the form of the Lord in the temple. There are three kinds of devotees of the Lord, and the neophyte is in the lowest stage. The neophyte devotee gives more attention to the Deity in the temple than to other devotees, so Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura warns that this sort of mentality should be corrected. A devotee should see that because Krishna is present in everyone’s heart as Paramātmā, every body is the embodiment or the temple of the Supreme Lord; so as one offers respect to the temple of the Lord, he should similarly properly respect each and every body in which the Paramātmā dwells. Everyone should therefore be given proper respect and should not be neglected.” (Gītā 9.11, purport)
